guidelines & Expectations

Martial arts is about more than just learning techniques—it helps your child build awareness, focus, confidence, and self-discipline, all while having fun. Below is a guide to what we expect from students in the dojo and how to make the most of each class.

The dojo opens 15 minutes before class. Please arrive at least 5 minutes early.

  • Your child should:

    • Come dressed in their uniform, or in clothes they can easily put over it.

    • Keep their uniform clean and tidy

    • Tie back long hair and remove any jewelry for safety

    • Ensure hands and feet are clean

    • Bring a water bottle and be responsible for personal belongings.

    • Remove shoes and place them neatly on the shoe rack.

    • Bow while seated at the edge of the mat when entering and leaving class, facing the center of the dojo.

About Bowing in the Dojo

Bowing is part of the tradition of Japanese martial arts, and it reflects respect, not worship.

  • We begin class with a bow to the front of the dojo (kamiza) to honor those who helped bring this practice to us.

  • Students bow to each other to show respect and gratitude for training together.

    • Observe more experienced students when unsure and ask questions if something isn’t clear.
